  • Mandela International Magnet School Renovation | Vigil & Associates

Previous Next Santa Fe Public Schools Mandela International Magnet School Renovation Santa Fe, NM In Progress Vigil & Associates is proud to partner with Santa Fe Public Schools on the transformative renovation and expansion of Mandela International Magnet School — Santa Fe’s only equal-access public International Baccalaureate (IB) school. The project reflects the school’s global-minded mission by creating spaces that foster inquiry, creativity, and collaboration. This forward-looking campus modernization includes the construction of two new buildings — a Classroom Building and a Food Service & Performing Arts Building — while preserving and integrating the existing Gymnasium and Larragoite Classroom Building. New Classroom Building Located south of the site’s central arroyo, this two-story structure will house: • 9 general education classrooms • 2 science classrooms • 2 art classrooms • A dedicated makerspace • Media center/library • Administrative offices and student support areas Designed to support a modern and interdisciplinary learning environment, the new building will offer flexible, light-filled spaces that promote hands-on learning and student engagement. New Food Service & Performing Arts Building Positioned north of the arroyo, this multi-purpose building will serve as both a dining facility and a creative arts hub. Key features include: • A student dining area with a warming kitchen • Orchestra and drama classrooms • A built-in performance platform within the dining area Connecting these two buildings will be an open-air breezeway, creating a central spine across the campus and maintaining visual and physical connection between both sides of the arroyo. Between the Food Service Building and the Classroom/Admin wing, a new dining courtyard will provide a welcoming and secure outdoor dining space — extending the social and creative energy of the campus into the open air. Campus & Site Enhancements The overall site will be thoughtfully reconfigured to improve circulation, safety, and outdoor programming. Updates include: • A new parking lot • Redesigned parent and bus drop-off lanes • Modified access points on Agua Fria Street to support two-way traffic • Outdoor enhancements, including new play courts and an open-air amphitheater for student gatherings and performances As part of the campus transformation, V&A will also create a grand new entrance at the main entry of the school. Drawing inspiration from design elements used throughout the project, the entry will incorporate a perforated metal screen and distinctive pipe pattern — an architectural gesture that reflects the traditional coyote fencing found throughout Santa Fe, connecting the school’s modern design with its regional roots. The architecture will feature metal stud framing with a stucco exterior, accented by a mix of metal paneling for visual interest and durability. Every aspect of the design reflects the school’s identity and commitment to a peaceful, inclusive, and globally aware education. Previous Next

  • Columbia Elementary School | Vigil & Associates

Previous Next Las Cruces Public Schools Columbia Elementary School Las Cruces, NM 2025 The new Columbia Elementary School was thoughtfully designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings by integrating the two-level structure into the site’s existing topography. This strategic design approach not only enhances the school’s functionality and accessibility but also minimizes its visual impact on the landscape. The main level of the school serves as the public-facing front of the campus and includes the primary entrance, administrative offices, a media center, and classroom wings for early childhood, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. This level opens to grade on the east side of the site, where the main parking area, parent pick-up/drop-off lanes, and dedicated playgrounds for Pre-K and Kindergarten are conveniently located. The lower level of the building opens to grade on the west side, connecting directly to the bus loop, service drive, utility yard, and athletic playfields. This floor houses essential shared and specialized spaces, including the full-service kitchen and cafeteria, a gymnasium, art and STEM classrooms, and classroom wings for 4th and 5th grades. By creating a dual-access, split-level design, the school efficiently separates vehicular traffic patterns for parents and buses, enhances safety, and ensures smooth day-to-day operations. The building is designed to support 21st-century learning with a strong focus on collaboration, natural light, energy efficiency, and age-appropriate learning environments across all grade levels. • Ted Chavez Trades & Technologies Center

Previous Next Central New Mexico Community College Ted Chavez Trades & Technologies Center Albuquerque, NM 2025 Vigil & Associates, in collaboration with Architekton and Design Systems Inc., recently completed the Ted Chavez Trades & Technologies Center at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM), a groundbreaking facility designed to transform skilled trades education. This state-of-the-art, 21st-century learning environment will serve as a dynamic hub where students, industry leaders, and the community come together to collaborate, innovate, and shape the future of trades education. The facility not only expands CNM’s educational reach but also strengthens industry connections, ensuring that current and emerging trades thrive as Albuquerque continues to grow. A key driver of the facility’s design was a comprehensive curriculum analysis, examining market trends and modern pedagogy in skilled trades education. The six-month visioning and programming effort focused on aligning industry needs with educational strategies, reinforcing the skilled trades as a respected and lucrative career path. This effort resulted in a multi-phase, multi-building plan to create an interdisciplinary hub, linking essential trades such as carpentry and welding in Phase I, with future expansion into architecture, surveying, machine tooling, and advanced automotive technologies—including diesel, electric, and autonomous vehicle maintenance. Phase I, completed in 2025, includes a 59,300-square-foot facility housing 32,330 square feet of high-tech labs, 10 classrooms, academic support spaces, and offices. Designed with adaptability in mind, the labs are built with infrastructure that allows for seamless modifications to support evolving programs and technologies. Large overhead doors provide effortless movement of vehicles and heavy equipment into outdoor workspaces, transforming exterior yards into interactive learning and demonstration areas. Every lab is infused with natural daylight and designed for high visibility, not only enhancing the educational experience but also showcasing the trades to visitors, prospective students, and industry partners. Beyond its functional excellence, the facility incorporates a user-centered interior that enhances the student and instructor experience. Open, flexible spaces encourage collaboration, while thoughtfully integrated wayfinding elements and clear sightlines foster a sense of accessibility and engagement. The use of commodity materials in creative ways delivers a cost-effective yet aesthetically compelling environment, reinforcing the hands-on, practical nature of skilled trades education while maintaining a budget-conscious approach. Through its innovative design, adaptable learning spaces, and commitment to visitor engagement, the new Ted Chavez Trades & Technologies Center at CNM will not only redefine how trades education is delivered but also inspire future generations to explore careers in the skilled trades—equipping them with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to thrive in an evolving industry landscape. • Skilled Trades and Technology Center | Vigil & Associates

Previous Next Rio Rancho Public Schools Skilled Trades and Technology Center Rio Rancho, NM 2025 With the added expertise of Architekton, Vigil & Associates has completed the new RRPS Skilled Trades and Technology Center, a transformative renovation that repurposes a former call center into a dynamic hybrid of a vocational school and high school. Having prior experience in designing trades schools, Vigil & Associates was able to apply that knowledge during the discussion in the visioning phase to clearly analyze the unique conditions of merging a high school with a trades school. V&A discussed with industry leaders and community leaders what the priorities of the facility should be and how to best organize the program to benefit the various pathways offered at the facility. Designed to foster innovation and adaptability, the Skilled Trades and Technology Center provides students with a cutting-edge learning environment, equipping them with the skills needed for careers in emerging tech industries. By integrating advanced technologies and repurposing a 73,929-square-foot facility, the center prepares students for success while supporting regional economic growth. Its collaborative design encourages cross-disciplinary engagement, creating a vibrant learning community that meets the evolving demands of the skilled trades workforce. This facility is part of a two-phase campus development, which will include both the skilled trades school and an automotive school on an adjacent lot. Shared by RRPS and CNM, the center features 11 classrooms, each designed with the necessary infrastructure to accommodate both institutions’ instructors. This flexibility allows the curriculum to evolve alongside industry trends. Half of the facility is dedicated to hands-on training in five key trades: welding, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, and electrical. Additionally, a specialized lab supports a networking course taught by CNM. The shop labs are intentionally designed for seamless collaboration, simulating real-world working conditions. With an open layout, students from different trades can easily interact, gaining firsthand experience in teamwork and coordination—essential skills for success in their future careers. Previous Next

  • Upper Plaza Enhancements

Previous Next University of New Mexico - Health Sciences Center Upper Plaza Enhancements Albuquerque, NM 2021 This project included the successful creation of a new UNM Health Sciences Center Collaborative Shade Structure which acts as a focal point in the heart of the HSC campus and provides opportunities for gatherings and outdoor events. This 3,000 square foot structure provides a place for students, faculty and staff as a respite on the campus, as well as opportunities for studying, collaboration and outdoor teaching. The design is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional ramada structure and includes materials which bring a natural element to the plaza – gabion rock baskets and aluminum shade panels with patterns that mimic natural leave shade patterns. These patterns create a very interesting shadow play on the surfaces below that changes over the course of the day and year. The steel structure is supported by 11 steel columns, which in turn are anchored to and supported by concrete columns just below the roof deck and 11 steel beams supporting the aluminum shade panels. The largest steels beams are 44 feet long and define the angular pathway that cuts through the plaza and acts as a defining feature to tie the campus elements together. Previous Next

  • Corrales Fire Station

Previous Next Village of Corrales Corrales Fire Station Corrales, NM 2005 Under the previous firm of ASA Architects, Vigil & Associates’ president/principal Ray Vigil worked with the Village of Corrales on this project. The three-bay fire sub-station was a new pre-engineered building finished in earth-tone stucco and accented in a northern New Mexico style. There was close contact with the community throughout the design to create a building that fits into the rural & historic character of the Village of Corrales. The fabricated metal construction introduced 3 new vehicle bays, concrete site work and a new covered porch. An additional prefabricated metal building was constructed on the north corner of the existing building providing new office space, restrooms, wet bar and an additional covered patio. It allows for both future expansion of the sub-station and the future addition of an on-site training facility. Previous Next

  • Fire Station 66

Previous Next Bernalillo County Fire Station 66 Albuquerque, NM In Progress Vigil & Associates is proud to support Bernalillo County with the design of Fire Station 66, a new facility strategically located to meet the demands of the rapidly growing West Mesa region of Albuquerque. As the area continues to see significant expansion—including new manufacturing, warehousing, and future residential development—the need for enhanced emergency response infrastructure became clear. Fire Station 66 is designed to ensure faster, more efficient response times across the region, including critical access to Interstate 40. Its highly visible location allows motorists in distress to easily identify the station, creating a vital point of contact for emergencies both on and off the freeway. • New Meadows Long Term Care Facility

Previous Next New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute & State of New Mexico Facilities Management Division New Meadows Long Term Care Facility Las Vegas, NM 2021 “The Meadows” is a major regional, licensed long-term care provider for elderly and disabled residents providing specialty services for dementia care in both elderly and younger residents. Vigil & Associates completed this new construction project in Las Vegas, NM, in three phases over the course of more than a decade. This project was a major undertaking for the State of New Mexico and had an extensive positive impact on the Las Vegas and surrounding communities. Careful attention was paid to ensure that the design was scaled appropriately for a residential type use, and fit into the community and the beautiful northern New Mexico landscape. The sawtooth style residence wings ensure that all resident rooms receive access to natural daylighting and views, oriented in a semi private manner which breaks down the scale of the facility. These wings are also used to frame, larger open courtyard spaces that allow for gathering areas for the residents to enjoy the views and weather in a secure manner. All phases of the project were a single-story design to avoid ramps, elevators and stairs. It also allowed better daylighting via skylights and light wells, and provided equal access to outdoor recreation areas for all residents. Resident/patient safety and comfort were key drivers of the project and drove many design decisions — with clear wayfinding, inviting colors and finishes — to allow patients a sense of freedom with exterior courtyards and various spaces while designing systems that prevented wandering. Clear sightlines and staff workstations located at key, strategic locations helped to ensure that the interior and exterior environments are welcoming, secure and easy to navigate. Phase I consisted of one 36-bed residential wing and the facility’s central area that included the main entrance, common spaces and service areas. The central area also has administration, public and support spaces, including business and nurse’s offices, a training room, staff locker and lounge areas, a gift shop, library and wellness clinic. Phase 2 was designed to replace the existing 52-bed Meadows Rest Home and the 110-bed Ponderosa Nursing Home located at the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute. This phase included two 36-bed residential wings connected to Phase 1 via a north/south corridor. Phase 3 added an additional 54 beds. Each wing has its own dining room, activity room, family rooms, bathing suites and secure courtyard. While the physical space for the complete service plant was included in Phase 1, equipment was added as the number of beds increased. The three phases of construction total over 137,852 SF. The building structure, foundation, envelope and systems were all fine tuned to the northern New Mexico climate to ensure that the facility will continue to serve the community and remain operational without disruption for decades to come. This project was designed in collaboration with Boulder Associates, Boulder, CO. Phase 1 LEED Gold Certified Phase 2 LEED Silver Certified Previous Next

  • Reibsomer Hall Renovations

Previous Next University of New Mexico Reibsomer Hall Renovations Albuquerque, NM 2020 The Chemistry Department’s Reibsomer Hall Project renovated and modernized research and teaching labs. The remodel is the first project in support UNM’s efforts to rebuild Chemistry’s teaching and research mission. The Chemistry Building renovation provided several challenges including the building type, age, project budget, energy usage requirements, completion time and phasing through continuous occupancy. Through collaboration between the Owner, CMAR and design team; the project was completed successfully early and under budget with an owner credit at the end. The project had a requirement to meet the deadline for state funding combined with working to keep the building operational through construction. This necessitated creativity in the sequencing of design packages and construction phasing. Early work packages were broken out of the scope of work in order to start work while the remainder of the design was being completed, and allowed the team to get ahead of the overall completion date. These packages included the restroom and utility cores as well as the long lead equipment. The design team worked closely with the CMAR and owners/users through design development and construction documents to assess the cost implications of all design decisions. Estimates were performed both by V&As’ cost estimator and the CMAR estimator at every design milestone. This was especially critical on this project given the limited funding circumstances. This process resulted in an integrated value engineering component which benefited the development of a series of alternates. The majority of the alternates were accepted allowing work previously thought to be out of the budget to be added. Vigil & Associates was the architect/design professional of record. V&A worked in collaboration with HDR lab specialists of Phoenix for all phases of project design and construction administration. We worked with UNM and Construction Manager at Risk from the very beginning. Potential conflicts and problems were addressed through early collaboration with the owner, CMAR, and design team. This project utilized several methodologies to gain the certification. The most extensive portion of the LEED effort is in energy modeling of the building systems. Gaining LEED certification for laboratory type buildings can be challenging due to the requirements of 100% exhaust air. By utilizing extensive energy modelling and innovative air circulation methods, the team was able to fine tune the HVAC system to be as efficient as possible and showing large efficiency gains over the baseline laboratory building. Also beneficial was utilizing resources on the campus to help this project. • LEED Gold certified Previous Next

  • Cuba High School | Vigil & Associates

Previous Next Cuba Independent School District Cuba High School Cuba, NM 2008 Originally built in 1957, the Cuba High School building as well as the Vo-Tech building were renovated and expanded to create a fresh and efficient school for the community. A bold, contemporary entrance defines the updated school and with its new kitchen and science labs addition; new HVAC and electrical systems; new roofing, and replacing interior finishes, doors and windows. The renovated Vo-Tech building now features a business lab, computer lab and automotive shop, complete with two welding stations. Consideration for the younger ninth grade students is reflected in a separate classroom wing, and careful planning was put into the classroom features for special education. The goal of bringing daylight to the interior was accomplished with larger windows and translucent panels added to the Multi-Purpose Room and throughout the building. Prior to renovation, the parking lot was unorganized and did not function to meet safety requirements. New site work created a separate bus loop, parent drop-off and student parking areas, alleviating morning congestion. The project also includes structural repairs, a new roof, and restroom renovations to the Gymnasium facility on campus as well as completion of a fire protection loop and adequate water conditioning to reduce the corrosive effects on plumbing system serving the entire district. • Las Cruces Readiness Center

Previous Next New Mexico Army National Guard Las Cruces Readiness Center Las Cruces, NM 2020 The New Mexico Army National Guard (NMARNG) Readiness Center included Limited Army Aviation Support Facility (LAASF) components in Las Cruces in south central New Mexico. The facility is 28,611 square feet of new construction on State-owned land. Vigil & Associates was an Architect of Record on this project. The prime architect was Coover-Clark & Associates who specializes in nationwide readiness centers and army aviation support facilities. Before the facility was completed, the NMARNG leased two hangar facilities from the Las Cruces International Airport less than one mile from the new facility. The leased facilities served as both an Aviation Support Facility and a Readiness Center, but they were undersized for these functions and in poor condition. The situation was inadequate to meet the maintenance and support requirements associated with the aircraft. With the completion of the new facility, the ability of NMARNG to support State and Federal missions has increased dramatically. The installment of adequate maintenance, training, storage, and administrative areas has had a positive impact on unit readiness and deployment capabilities. Project includes: • Aircraft Hangar Areas • Administration Areas • Classrooms • Learning Center • Lockers/Toilets/Showers • Break/Assembly Area • Physical Fitness Area • Facility Storage • Mechanical/Electrical Areas • Telecom/Information Technology Areas Previous Next
