Intensive Support Program Prototype

The Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) Intensive Support Program (ISP) Prototype was developed to address the specialized educational, developmental, and physical needs of students with disabilities in a supportive, inclusive learning environment. The project established a district-wide prototype for regional ISP "Hub" facilities, strategically located within each quadrant of the district and managed by the APS Special Education Department.
The prototype balances fiscal responsibility, operational efficiency, and student well-being by creating facilities that are both functional and welcoming. The design emphasizes universal accessibility, sensory-responsive environments, and meaningful opportunities for inclusion with the surrounding school community.
Planning focused on integrating each ISP Hub into existing school campuses rather than creating standalone facilities, reinforcing equitable access to shared resources and promoting interaction with peers. Although construction was ultimately deferred due to funding, the completed prototype provides APS with a comprehensive, ready-to-implement design solution for future development.
SPECIALIZED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
The prototype includes a variety of purpose-built spaces designed to support diverse learning styles, therapeutic needs, and student independence.
SENSORY ROOM
The Sensory Room was designed as a multi-sensory environment inspired by Snoezelen principles, providing a calming and engaging space for individualized sensory experiences. A domed ceiling creates opportunities for dynamic lighting and sound effects that enhance the therapeutic environment.
MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM
The Multi-Purpose Room accommodates a variety of educational, therapy, and recreational activities. The space incorporates rubber flooring, rounded corners, and acoustical treatments to provide a safe, comfortable, and sensory-sensitive environment.
THERAPEUTIC COURTYARD
The central outdoor courtyard was envisioned as both a recreational space and an extension of the learning environment, supporting physical therapy, sensory exploration, and imaginative play. Planned features include:
* Rubberized therapy and play surfaces for improved safety and accessibility.
* Interactive water elements that encourage tactile exploration.
* Physical therapy features, including stair-climbing opportunities and accessible ramps.
* Textured walls and surfaces to stimulate touch and sensory development.
* Sound-generating ramps that create auditory feedback during movement.
* Native landscaping and shaded seating areas that provide comfort and seasonal interest.
* Water harvesting features integrated into sand and water play areas.
* A flexible shade structure capable of supporting wheelchair swings, climbing elements, wind chimes, and other therapeutic equipment.
* A multi-use ball court and ball wall supporting physical education, recreation, and interactive learning.
* Colored glass block elements that demonstrate color and light as natural sunlight filters through the space.
CLASSROOM DESIGN
The classrooms were designed to provide flexible, adaptable learning environments that can evolve with changing student and program needs. Clerestory windows and light wells introduce abundant diffused natural daylight while minimizing glare and visual distractions.
Spaces support a variety of learning activities, including collaborative instruction, individual work, sensory regulation, and quiet reflection. Durable, healthy, and low-maintenance materials were selected throughout the facility, while acoustical treatments, indirect lighting, low-noise mechanical systems, and clutter-free layouts create calm, low-distraction environments that promote student comfort, engagement, and success.
