Chama Valley Independent Schools

Escalante Mid-High School

Tierra Amarilla, NM

2008

This project involved the thoughtful integration of an existing facility into the development of a new mid-high school campus for Chama Valley Independent Schools. The design seamlessly blended new construction with existing structures to create a cohesive, modern learning environment that reflects the needs of a growing student population.

A central highlight of the project is the striking new commons area and cafeteria. Designed as a flexible, multi-purpose space, it features soaring ceilings, a dramatic wall of windows for natural light, and exposed structural trusses that add architectural interest while maintaining a sense of openness. The use of clerestory windows along the main corridors allows daylight to penetrate deep into the building, promoting a bright, welcoming atmosphere throughout the interior.

One of the most complex aspects of the project was maintaining uninterrupted school operations during construction. Careful coordination with school administrators and the construction team ensured that demolition and new building phases were executed safely and efficiently, without disrupting student learning. Thanks to this collaborative approach, the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget—delivering a state-of-the-art facility tailored to support the academic and social development of Chama Valley’s mid- and high school students.
