Valencia Campus Improvements
Valencia, NM
2021
The UNM Valencia Campus Improvement project was a CMAR project, with Vigil & Associates providing full architectural services to create a dynamic and engaging environment where the student experience is welcoming, immersive, and inspiring. This CMAR project delivered a modern, energetic, and relevant building solution—coming in $550,000 under budget, with no A/E-initiated change orders, and completed on time to great acclaim.
Designed to enhance the student journey, the improvements include a striking new gateway plaza, a clearly defined campus entry with a monument sign, and thoughtfully landscaped surroundings that create a strong first impression.
Inside, the main lecture hall was transformed into an interactive and flexible learning space. Innovative rotating seating allows students to seamlessly shift from traditional lectures to small-group collaboration, fostering engagement and connection. The interiors were designed with a student-first approach, ensuring an inviting and inspiring atmosphere, all achieved on a shoestring budget without sacrificing quality or function.
Further enhancing the campus atmosphere, the student union building (SUB) underwent a renovation to provide an updated, welcoming hub for student life. A new indoor/outdoor student gathering and dining area was also added, designed with universal accessibility in mind. The space offers a vibrant, social environment where students of all abilities can interact, relax, and engage with their community comfortably.
By reimagining the campus through the lens of experience, interaction, and accessibility, this project ensures that students don’t just attend UNM Valencia—they experience it.
